Well, it sounds like Christopher Meloni won’t be coming back to ‘Law & Order: SVU’ any time soon. He revealed on the May 9 episode of ‘WWHL’ that he has no regrets about leaving the show whatsoever. ‘SVU’ fans, this video is going to break your Stabler-loving heart.
These are the two major questions that Law & Order: SVU fans want answered: Why did Christopher Meloni, 56, leave the show? Will he ever return? The actor definitively answered the first question on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. Andy Cohen, 48, asked Christopher point-blank if he regretted leaving the show. “Not for a day,” Christopher said.
“How did you know when it was time to leave?” Andy asked. “When negotiations broke down,” Christopher said before laughing.
Christopher co-starred as Elliot Stabler alongside Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson on Law & Order: SVU for 12 seasons before leaving in 2011. Even though Christopher has left the show, Benson and Stabler remain one of the most iconic TV duos of all time. Mariska, 53, and Christopher have remained super close over the years, frequently reuniting for epic photos.
There is still a chance Christopher could reprise his role on the hit crime-fighting show. Showrunner Warren Leight admitted back in 2016 that he had planned to bring back Stabler if season 17 was going to be the show’s last. SVU is still going strong in season 18 and shows no signs of slowing down. But when the day does come, you’ll likely see Benson and Stabler reunite one last time on TV.
