The reason for the emergency meeting at Buckingham Palace on May 4 has been revealed. Prince Philip is retiring at the age of 95, and will no longer book any new public engagements.
“His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh [Prince Philip] has decided that he will no longer carry out public engagements from the autumn of this year,” a statement made by the Royal Family on May 4 read. “In taking this decision, The Duke has the full support of [Queen Elizabeth].”
The statement continued: “Prince Philip will attend previously scheduled engagements between now and August, both individually and accompanying The Queen. Thereafter, The Duke will not be accepting new invitations for visits and engagements, although he may still choose to attend certain public events from time to time. The Duke Of Edinburgh is Patron, President or a member of 780 organisations, with which he will continue to be associated, although he will no longer play an active role by attending engagements. Her Majesty will continue to carry out a full programme of official engagements with the support of members of the Royal Family.”
Hours before this announcement was made, the Internet was sent into a frenzy regarding whether or not something had happened to Prince Philip or Queen Elizabeth after news broke that an emergency meeting was being held at Buckingham Palace. The meeting was considered “highly unusual,” and although The Duke was just photographed out and about earlier in the day, people feared the worst.
Prince Philip will celebrate his 96th birthday this June, yet he still attended 210 public engagements in 2016. His 70th anniversary with Queen Elizabeth is in November.
