Meeting your significant other’s parents can be super stressful — especially if it involves a weekend at their home or away. That’s why we turned to an expert matchmaker, who gave us the three items that should always be on your checklist to make packing and planning that much easier.
If your boyfriend or girlfriend invites you home for a weekend to meet his family, it’s a good sign that things are definitely getting more serious — and you obviously want to make a great first impression! Deciding on the right outfit for meeting the fam can be nerve-wracking enough, let alone having to pack for a whole weekend — and, chances are if you’re packing under pressure you’re more likely to forget something essential.
Matchmaker and founder of LastFirst, Emily Holmes Hahn, offered up the three items she always tells her clients not to leave home without if they’re heading home with their significant other to meet their family for the first time. “In terms of items you might not automatically remember to pack, I would say 1. A hostess gift 2. Quality leisurewear and slippers for mornings at home 3. Your signature perfume- both to wear and to spritz on your pillow when you leave!” It’s true — you spend so much time planning out your outfits for dinner or brunch that you may forget a cozy, appropriate outfit for when you’re around the house.
While making a list can also help ensure you remember all of your necessities, it’s best to take a deep breath and put your best face forward — you don’t want to seem stressed out or uptight. “More important than any ‘thing’ though, is an amazing attitude and genuine openness and willingness to adapt to his family’s lifestyle, however different it may be from yours,” she added.
