Amidst claims that ’13 Reasons Why’ ‘glamorizes’ teen suicide, Selena Gomez is proudly defending the buzzy Netflix show. Just because something is difficult to talk about, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be addressed. Read on to see what she said!
Selena Gomez, 24, proudly defended 13 Reasons Why after the series received a lot of criticism for how it depicted teen suicide. “We stayed very true to the book,” she told the Associated Press. “That’s initially what [author] Jay Asher created was a beautifully tragic, complicated yet suspenseful story and I think that’s what we wanted to do.”
Selena explained she totally understood why the show got people talking. “We wanted to do it justice and, yeah, [the backlash is] gonna come no matter what,” she said. “It’s not an easy subject to talk about, but I’m very fortunate with how it’s doing.” Selena definitely loved her time working on the show as a producer. She even got matching tattoos with the Tommy Dorfman and Alisha Boe from the show. The ink was semicolons because they’re a symbol for mental health awareness and suicide prevention.
Paris Jackson, 19, took to Instagram to warn people about the “triggering” factors. “Please only watch this show with caution and keep in mind that it may put you in a dark place,” she wrote. “If you are struggling please don’t watch it. If you think you can handle it, please by all means check it out.” Little Mix’s Perrie Edwards was super into the Netflix, but admitted she thought it was rather” disturbing.” She said, “The way they got the message across was amazing, and although I found it massively disturbing, I feel like every person going to school should watch it.”
