What is ‘The Keepers?’
The Keepers is a seven-part documentary series coming to Netflix from The Case Against 8 director, Ryan White. It will walk audiences through the unsolved murder of Sister Cathy Cesnik, a Baltimore nun who went missing at 26 in 1969 and was found dead nearly two months later on Jan. 3, 1970, in southwest Baltimore County.
What do we know about the story?
A woman only known as “Jane Doe” — one of Sister Cathy’s former students — came forward in the 1990s to reveal she was sexually abused by the high school’s chaplain and that she was taken to Sister Cathy’s body, and told, “See what happens when you say bad things about people.” Regardless, no one was ever held accountable for the murder.
Who was Cathy?
While the story was kept mum outside of Baltimore, we do know that Cathy Cesnik taught English and drama at Archbishop Keough High School, and was one of the school’s most popular teachers. Many believe that the show could uncover secrets of the murder, a possible coverup and behind-the-scenes activities of the Catholic Church.
Who else will be involved?
Louis George “Bud” Roemer is a retired homicide detective formerly with the Baltimore County Police Department who worked on the case. In 2013, he spoke to The Baltimore Sun about the unsolved case that stays with him — and even showed them the autopsy photo that showed a hole in her head. “There was something wrong at the Catholic high school where Sister Cathy taught,” he said. “What you had there was a whole lot of sex going on among priests and students. Can you imagine the scandal, in 1970, if that stuff had ever come out in a trial? Hell, it could have blown the lid right off the Church! It doesn’t make any sense to me. Never did. No, there was something going on at that school, and it all came to a head. And when it did, Sister Cathy wound up on the garbage dump with her skull caved in.”
When does it premiere?
All seven episodes will air on May 19 on Netflix.
