This is devastating. Mike Pence cast the tie-breaking vote in the Senate decision to keeps federal family planning funding away from Planned Parenthood on March 30. Find out what this tragic choice means for you, here.
The Senate held a vote on March 30 to decide whether states should be allowed to refuse to give Planned Parenthood any of their family planning funding. They were split right down the middle, 50-50, so Vice President Mike Pence, 57, made a rare appearance to cast a vote to break the tie. Surprise, surprise, he decided to defund the important nonprofit.
The vote was on a measure that was meant to ensure that federal money would continue to go to various clinics that give low-income women health services, including pap smears, pregnancy care, and contraception. Planned Parenthood is among those, and although the federal money is never allowed to go toward abortion procedures, the fact that these clinics perform them is why Republicans want to prevent these women in need from getting any care at all.
“Republicans didn’t listen to us,” said Senator Patty Murray of Washington. “They didn’t listen to women across the country who made it clear that restricting women’s access to the full range of reproductive care is unacceptable.” Ms. Murray would know best how devastating this ruling is, since she’s the senior Democrat on the health committee.
Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America expressed her frustration in a statement: “A group of male politicians — led by Mike Pence — are once again trying to rip away women’s access to birth control. There’s a reason this measure barely passed: people are sick and tired of politicians making it even harder for them to access health care, and they will not stand for it. It’s clear politicians in Congress will stop at nothing to claw back women’s health and rights — and we’ll need to fight back with everything we’ve got.
“Four million people depend on the Title X family planning program, and this move by Washington politicians would endanger their health and well being. It is appalling that 24 hours ago, Vice President Pence was headlining a forum on empowering women, and today, he is leading mostly male politicians to take away women’s birth control. Too many people still face barriers to health care, especially young people, people of color, those who live in rural areas, and people with low incomes. We will never stop fighting for the right of every person to access the care they need.
“We call on President Trump to stand by his word, and not undermine access to birth control for women with low incomes.”
So how does this effect you? Some states like Texas have already passed laws to defund Planned Parenthood, so those rulings will remain intact and make it impossible for women to get affordable healthcare services there. In other more progressive states, you still have nothing to worry about. Hopefully the Democrats will continue to fight to undo this horrible decision.
