It’s over for Michelle Kwan and her husband, Clay Pell — the politician has filed for divorce from his Olympic champion wife just over four years after their wedding.
Michelle Kwan, 36, and Clay Pell are dunzo! Clay filed for divorce from the figure skater, citing irreconcilable differences, TMZ confirmed on March 29. In his legal documents, he does not mention spousal support, but does ask that his Olympian wife pay the bills for the lawyer he used in this process.
“It is with deep regret that I share that Michelle and my marriage is coming to an end,” Clay told the Providence Journal in a statement. “This is a sad and difficult turn of events for our family. I love Michelle, and wish her the very best as her life takes her in a new direction. I want to thank friends and family who have given wisdom and support, and I ask for privacy during this challenging time.” The exes have no children together, so custody will not be an issue.
Michelle is a two-time Olympic champion — despite being favored to win gold in both 1998 and 2002, she took home silver and bronze, respectively, but is still regarded as one of the greatest figure skaters of all time. After the 2006 Olympics, she mostly stepped away from the sport, and instead enrolled in school at the University of Denver. After graduating undergrad, she received a master’s in law and diplomacy from Tuft’s University.
Through her diplomacy work, she met Clay, who worked as a White House National Security staff member under President Barack Obama, in 2011. They married in January 2013 in Providence Rhode Island, and one year later, he campaigned to become the Democratic candidate for the Governor of Rhode Island. His campaign was unsuccessful.
