FBI Director James Comey is testifying publicly before Congress for the first time since President Donald Trump claimed that former president Barack Obama wiretapped him. Watch the live stream of Comey’s testimony, including allegations Russia hacked the election, here.
Congress is determined to finally get answers on two major questions today, March 20, from the Justice Department when FBI Director James Comey, 56, and NSA Director Admiral Michael Rogers testify before the House Select Intelligence Committee at 10:00am ET. Both chambers want to get to the bottom of claims made by President Donald Trump, 70, that then-president Barack Obama, 55, “wiretapped” him during the 2016 presidential election. It’s a lofty accusation, and one that so far has zero evidence to back it up.
The Intelligence Committee, as well as the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism have asked Comey to turn over any evidence they have that supports Trump’s claims. Comey has thus far dodged all questions about the alleged wiretapping, and had until March 20 to answer the House panel’s questions. They “may resort to a compulsory process if our questions continue to go unanswered,” according to spokesman Jack Langer.
No matter what Comey says during today’s hearing, he’ll either anger the president or Congress. If there really is evidence that Obama wiretapped Trump, then that opens up a whole other can of worms! Comey is also going to be asked about reports that Russia hacked the presidential election, as well as former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn‘s clandestine meetings with a Russian diplomat.
The FBI, NSA and CIA issued a joint report in January 2017 concluding that Russian President Vladimir Putin started a campaign using “covert intelligence operations and overt propaganda” to sway the 2016 US election — aka help elect Trump and undermine Hillary Clinton, 69.
