Sadly, noted banker and philanthropist David Rockefeller has passed away at the age of 101 on March 20. David was the last surviving grandson of legendary oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller, a true New York icon. May he rest in peace.
David Rockefeller died at the age of 101 at his home in Pocantico Hills, New York after suffering from congestive heart failure, his publicist said in a statement. He died peacefully in his sleep. David was the youngest and last remaining grandson of famed John D. Rockefeller, the founder of Standard Oil and the United States’ first billionaire. At the time of his death, David was the US’ oldest living billionaire.
David was the only one out of John D. Rockefeller Jr.‘s five sons to stay in the corporate world throughout his entire career, rising to ultimately become the CEO of Chase Bank in 1969. While his wealth and business acumen preceded him, David was equally known for his wonderful philanthropy work. He and his brothers created the Rockefeller Brothers Fun in 1940 to promote worldwide social change; he donated $225 million to the charity in 2006. His philanthropy earned him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998.
“No individual has contributed more to the commercial and civic life of New York City over a longer period of time than David Rockefeller,” former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a statement after David’s death. “During my time in City Hall, he was always there for the city when we called.”
David married Margaret McGrath in 1940, and they had six children — David Jr., Richard, Abby, Neva, Margaret and Eileen. His wife, who was active in philanthropy herself, sadly died in 1996.
