The Targaryen sigil, the three-headed dragon, kicks off the first ‘Game of Thrones’ season 7 teaser, giving us more hope that the show will confirm the ‘Three Heads of the Dragon’ fan theory. But the promo also lends evidence to something much darker.
“I know what my father was, what he did,” Daenerys says in a voiceover as the promo shows the Targaryen sigil, the three-headed dragon. “I know the Mad King earned his name.”
Let’s stop right there. The three-headed dragon. Yes, it’s the Targaryen sigil, but many fans believes it means so much more. When Daenerys visited the House of the Undying, she had a vision of her older brother, Rhaegar, who said that “the dragon has three heads.” The three-headed dragon prophecy has been hinted at multiple times over the course of the series, including Daenerys’ three dragons, the house sigil, and Daenerys’ ancestor Aegon taking over Westeros with his two sisters on dragons.
Fans believe that Rheagar’s prophecy means three people must ride Dany’s three dragons before she can conquer Westeros and win the Iron Throne. Daenerys is already one rider, and with Jon Snow being of Targaryen lineage, many assume he’s another. The third rider is still up in the air, but we’ve seen that Tyrion Lannister has a connection with Dany’s dragons. There’s also talk Tyrion could be a secret Targaryen. Daenerys, Jon Snow, and Tyrion have a lot in common, so these characters being the three riders makes sense.
“Lannister, Targaryen, Baratheon, Stark, Tyrell — they’re all just spokes on a wheel,” Daenerys, from her speech in season 5, continues in the promo. “This one’s on top, then that one’s on top, and on and on it spins — crushing those on the ground.”
Suddenly, the sigils begin to crumble. With Daenerys heading to Westeros, will she fulfill her promise and break the wheel? Will Jon Snow, Dany, and Tyrion break down the Stark, Targaryen, and Lannister Houses and unite as one?
However, the destruction of the sigils could be symbolizing the fall of the Wall and the White Walkers invasion. In the first line we’ve heard from season 7, Jon Snow says, “There is only one war that matters. The Great War. And it is here.”
The promo ends with a glimpse of the symbol that the White Walkers notoriously left behind when Jon Snow came across the bodies of the men of the Night’s Watch in season 3. We also saw the symbol in one of Bran’s vision in season 6. The symbol is contained within the eye of a White Walker. Winter is coming, and so are the White Walkers.
Game of Thrones season 7 will premiere July 16 on HBO.
