Tarek El Moussa, 35, found out he had thyroid cancer after a fan pointed out that there was a lump on his neck when watching him on Flip or Flop. The same thing happened to actor Lorna Nickson Brown, 26, when a photo she had taken showed one in plain sight. Now, she is taking a stand to help others know what to look for. Check out her story and tips below:

It might seem shocking that Lorna is only 26 — and she felt absolutely fine — but we know that this can happen to anyone. “This isn’t what I thought cancer looked like. The minute you tell people, it’s the cancer face. I didn’t feel ill,” Lorna told Indy100. So scary.

In Tarek’s case, a fan who was a registered nurse was watching Flip or Flop when she saw the telltale sign and emailed the producers of the show. “I was having a harder time swallowing, and this lump was getting bigger,” Tarek said at the time. “I actually went to the doctor twice for it, and they said it’s nothing. So, once I saw [the note], I was like, ‘You know what? I need to get a second opinion.’” He had the lump removed.

To recap, both Lorna and Tarek’s symptom of thyroid cancer (a lump in the neck) can be seen in a selfie, and it’s an important message that reminds us all to look out for each other.
