The ‘Once Upon A Time’ midseason premiere was action-packed from beginning to end. Regina and Robin had one epic reunion, more of Emma’s backstory was revealed, Gideon confessed his dark plans to his parents, and more!
Yay! It’s a young Emma flashback! The savior is homeless and hiding out in Minneapolis after escaping from her foster home. As she tries to stay warm on the streets by burning the pages of books, a teenage boy comes up to her and asks her to stop. She could learn something from the story. The pages in question are from The Ugly Duckling, the tale about a duck who transforms into a beautiful swan. (Remember this moment.)
The boy reminds Emma, “If we believe in something strong enough, we have the power to change our fate.” He takes her to the police station where she tells a woman that her name is Emma Swan! So that’s how she got her last name!
In the other realm, where Regina and Emma are currently trapped, Robin is robbing them of their goods. SwanQueen is not in a good position at the moment. Henry 2.0 is after Regina and super vengeful. Despite her life being at stake, Regina’s focus is entirely on Robin. She wonders why he hasn’t aged at all. A worried Emma tells Regina not to get too wrapped up in this world’s Robin.
A Not-So Great Family Reunion
Back in Storybrooke, Charming is determined to stop Gideon before he hurts Emma. Hook is more than a little worried about what Charming might do.
The Gold family reunion doesn’t exactly go as well as Rumple and Belle hoped it would. Gideon reveals all to his parents. He was raised by the Black Fairy and didn’t have the best upbringing in the world. Apparently, the Black Fairy tried to turn him evil. He swears he’s not like the Black Fairy, yet he still plans on killing Emma.
He wants to kill Emma so that he can become the savior and save another land from the Black Fairy’s clutches. Since he is Rumple’s son, I have feeling that’s not the only reason why he wants to become an all-powerful savior. “When I kill Emma Swan, I will finally become a hero,” he says.
Yeah, that’s not going to happen…
Rumples tries to persuade Gideon not to go through with his plan and pleads with his son to let him pay the price for his anger. He tries to provoke Gideon. Even though Rumple, who’s got a hell of a lot of power, offers to help Gideon, his son turns him away.
Believe, Believe, Believe
As Regina and Emma go searching throughout the other realm, Emma comes across Pinocchio! She needs his help to get home and wants to get her hands on the magical wardrobe, the one Emma traveled to the real world in long ago. There’s a problem, though. Pinocchio dismantled it, but he agrees to help Emma in whatever way he can.
In the midst of all this, Regina steps away and leaves a note. She can’t leave this world without getting some answers from Robin. She goes searching for him and begins to reminisce about when she first met him. Tinker Bell (!) helped her out when she wanted a fresh start, which led her to Robin.
She finds Robin and talks to him. She thinks he was better off without her, but we all know that’s not true. Their convo is cut short when they’re both captured by Sheriff Nottingham.
Meanwhile, Pinocchio and Emma are at the special tree ready to carve some wood when a very old and no longer handsome Hook shows up to “rescue” Emma. He’s got long white hair and a GUT. I am OFFICIALLY DEAD. I’m sure Colin O’Donoghue had fun filming this scene.
He grabs Pinocchio’s sacred chisel and wants to duel, but Emma puts a stop to it real quick. When Emma blasts Hook away, the chisel breaks and Pinocchio’s devastated. Pinocchio believes he needs magic to carve the tree. He doesn’t think he’s good enough to do it himself.
While locked up with Robin, Regina realizes that maybe Robin isn’t better off without her after all. He confesses that he hasn’t been happy in a very long time. Robin tries to get Regina to tell him everything about his other life. All of these memories are really getting to her. She does tell Robin that he’s dead in the other world, but he lived a happy life.
Charming apologizes to a sleeping Snow for not being able to wake her up. He refuses to do so until he’s fixed this Emma situation. Belle arrives to inform Charming and Hook about Gideon. Naturally, Hook is concerned about Rumple aiding Gideon instead of stopping him. Belle really just wants to talk to her son before things get out of control. She doesn’t want anyone getting hurt, especially her son. But she knows what Charming and Hook are willing to do for Emma and that terrifies her.
Emma finds a carved box with her name on it and inside is a toy swan. She confronts Pinocchio and demands an explanation. He was the boy from her past! The advice he gave her changed her life, and now she wants him to follow his own words. Thankfully, her pep talk works!
Before she’s set to go, Robin gives Regina his lucky feather, so that a piece of him is with her always. Regina is forced to say goodbye again. Knowing how much this is killing her, Emma asks Regina if she wants to bring Robin with them. If there’s a chance she could have him back for good, why not take it?
“I’m afraid of tempting fate,” Regina admits. “No. We make our own fate,” Emma says. God, I love me some SwanQueen!
Robin is in! They all return to Storybrooke together. Emma and Regina get there safely, but Robin is nowhere to be found. She thinks it’s over — again. But then he appears! It’s about time Regina got some happiness.
War Is Coming
Gideon and Emma come face-to-face in the middle of the street. They start their brutal fight, and Gideon freezes the gang so they can’t help her. Emma is not letting her life end this way. “I’m fated to die. I will die. But not today,” she says before taking Gideon down.
She’s ready to kill him, but Rumple begs her not to, which gives Gideon enough time to disappear. Ugh.
The gang is finally reunited! Regina quickly explains this alternate reality Robin. After all, he did die. Emma goes to find Pinocchio for another chat. He admits that he knew it was her when he came across her all those years ago.
Rumple and Belle have a heart-to-heart at the wishing well. They both believe Gideon has the power to change his ways and hopes he will. Rumple doesn’t want Gideon to kill Emma. He knows the pain that comes from being evil, and he doesn’t want that for his son. Is Rumple finally changing his ways?
Belle believes Rumple must have some trick up his sleeve, but he swears he doesn’t. He wants to work with Belle to save their son and everyone else. War is coming to Storybrooke and Gideon’s ready to fight.
