Disney released the first look at the ‘Mary Poppins’ sequel, and we have to say, it couldn’t be more elegant and well, Mary Poppins-esque. If you weren’t already convinced that Emily Blunt was the perfect casting, you will be now.
In the first look, Emily Blunt, 34, has totally transformed into the gorgeous nanny, Mary Poppins. Mary Poppins Returns will be the new sequel to Disney’s 1964 film, also starring Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep.
We know we will also be introduced to three new Banks children, played by Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and newcomer Joel Dawson. The film is set in the time period of the original novels, the 1930s depression-era. Michael and Jane are now grown up, with three children and a housekeeper living on Cherry Tree Lane. After a personal loss, Mary Poppins re-enters their lives, along with “optimistic street lamplighter” Jack (Lin-Manuel), and uses her unique skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives. She also brings in her eccentric cousin, Topsy (Meryl).
Of course, you can also expect to see Angela Lansbury and Dick Van Dyke in the movie, because why not?! “I’ll be going to London in the spring to do my role, and I get to do a little song and dance number. I’ve gotta be a part of it,” Dick Van Dyke told Entertainment Tonight in a new interview. Dick famously portrayed the role of Bert in the 1964 flick, and also played the banker, Mr. Dawes.
“They wanted me to play the son of the old banker — and this time there’s no four hours in the makeup chair! I grew into the part. I don’t have to wear any makeup,” he said at the time, adding yes, there will be a “little song and dance.” Let’s be honest, it had to include some singing and dancing, right?!
Mary Poppins Returns will be released in U.S. theaters on December 25, 2018. HollywoodLifers, do you think Emily makes a good Mary Poppins? Will you see the film?
