Season 12 of ‘The Voice’ is underway — and the coaches are more determined than ever to get the best singers on their teams. The competition is already shaping up to be super intense this time around, and you can follow along with the entire premiere episode with our full recap here!
Right off the bat, host Carson Daly addresses what we’ve all been waiting for: Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton’s relationship, of course! It’s pretty clear from the get-go that this romance is going to be a big theme in season 12, especially since the pair still tried to be so secretive about it when they were both coaches during Season 9.
Let’s get to the singing, though, am I right?! The first artist to take the stage is J Chosen, and all four coaches are totally blown away when he sings “Sexual Healing” by Marvin Gaye. Gwen, Blake, Adam Levine and Alicia Keys give their pitches, and he shocks them all by choosing Gwen as his coach. Even she totally thought Alicia or Adam had that one!
Next, Lauren Duski sings “You Were Meant For Me” by Jewel. Considering Lauren mentions in her pre-taped package that she wants to pick Gwen as her coach, it seems like her decision is going to be a no-brainer when Gwen, Adam and Blake turn around. She changes her mind at the last minute, though, and makes the ultimate betrayal — she chooses Gwen’s boyfriend instead!
Johnny Hayes, who failed to turn a chair in season 11, is back for a second chance. His decision to return proves to be totally worth it, as Gwen and Adam both push their buttons for his performance of “Try A Little Tenderness” by Otis Redding. Adam gets his first team member when Johnny chooses the Maroon 5 frontman as his coach.
The next performer is Skyler Harris, who wants Alicia for her coach. She sings “One & Only,” but sadly, no coaches turn around. However, they of course urge her to come back next year and try again! It’s another four chair turn next when 16-year-old Anatalia Villaranda performs “Runaway Baby.” The coaches fight hard to get the talented singer on their teams, but she ultimately goes with Alicia as her coach.
Up next is Stephanie Rice, who brings all the feels with her rendition of “Piece By Piece” by Kelly Clarkson. It’s a battle between the lovebirds, as Blake and Gwen are the only two to turn around — Adam obviously can’t help but crack a few jokes, of course — but in the end, Stephanie goes with girl power on this one!
Country singer Branden Martin is up next, and although he’s dying to get on Team Blake, unfortunately, no chairs turn for his performance of Travis Tritt’s “Here’s A Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares).” The next artist is Mark Isaiah, a 19-year-old Justin Bieber fan whose performance of Shawn Mendes’ “Mercy” gets Adam and Gwen to push their buttons. Adam is victorious and lands another singer on his team.
A 14-year-old superstar in the making named Brennley Brown takes the stage next, and she wins over Blake and Alicia with a performance of “Stupid Boy.” Of course, it’s no surprise when the aspiring country singer chooses Blake as her coach! Shaun Chrisjohn sings next, but the coaches are being picky this season, and no one turns for his rendition of “You Are The Best Thing.”
The night ends with an epic performance. Felicia Temple — who is literally nicknamed ‘Felicia Keys’ — sings “All I Could Do Is Cry,” and Gwen, Blake and Alicia turn around. With some nudging from Adam, Alicia and Felicia duet on the former’s hit “Fallin’,” and it’s no surprise when she goes with Alicia as her coach. What a great night!
Here’s where the teams stand so far:
Gwen: J Chosen, Stephanie Rice
Blake: Lauren Duski, Brennley Brown
