‘The Walking Dead’ took a shocking turn on the Feb. 26 episode when Eugene and Negan came face-to-face again. Josh McDermitt broke down what’s next, why he’s afraid to find out, and more. WARNING: spoilers ahead!
Toward the end of The Walking Dead this week, Eugene (Josh McDermitt) showed that he’s no longer in the background — he stood up to Negan, interrupting him when he asked what his name was to say, “I’m Negan… I am utterly, completely, stone cold Negan.” Josh revealed that when reading the script, he yelled “Yes!” because after seven seasons, he was still always surprised by the turns. But does this mean that Eugene will actually be on board the Negan train?
“That I don’t know. Again, there are certain things that I’ve asked, “Don’t tell me. Please, do you mind not telling me unless I need to know?,” he admitted to Yahoo. “That was one of them. I didn’t want to know the answer to that, because I would end up playing it. I would play it with a wink or I would play it with too much seriousness or whatever. I just wanted to play it truthfully for that moment. I obviously made some decisions for myself, which I’m going to keep for myself, I’m not going to share with people.”
He also revealed that it was really amazing to see how Eugene has grown throughout the show, and that he finally has some confidence with Negan — and he likes that, regardless of who it is.
“He was so scared and so fearful of Negan… those feelings that were coursing through his veins. He hated it. He hated it so much,” Josh said. “So in the moment where he says, ‘I’m Negan,’ that’s an important moment for sure, but there’s a moment before that line when Negan says, ‘Hey, you don’t have to be scared anymore.’ That’s like a hit of crack to Eugene, because I think that’s all he wants. He’s just breathing that in, just like, ‘Oh, my gosh, this is literally all I want.; I think that’s what allows him the freedom to cut off Negan mid-sentence, which is a bold thing to do, and just profess his love right there.”
“Negan’s providing a pretty nice life for Eugene right now. It remains to be seen how this is all going to play out, but it’s very exciting,” he said. “It’s also a little scary, I’ll be honest.” Ok well we’d say really scary but it was so nice to see a confident Eugue.
HollywoodLifers, do you think Eugene will cross over to the dark side for good? Or just use it to escape?
