Jimmy Kimmel was not holding back during his Academy Awards opening number and he absolutely nailed it. One of the many disses of the night was fired at Mel Gibson — in one sentence he mentioned Mel’s biggest film, and his belief system! Watch the video here.
Jimmy Kimmel, 49, never ceases to amaze! After Justin Timberlake‘s seriously epic opening number, the host took the stage at the Feb. 26 show, and naturally took some jabs at Donald Trump and Matt Damon, but he also — for some reason — pointed out Mel Gibson! After commenting that everyone had told him he had to do something to bring the country together during this tough time, he said he couldn’t do it.
“Let’s just get something straight off the top; there’s only one Braveheart in this room and he’s not going to reunite us either,” Jimmy said, nodding at Mel Gibson. Of course Mel was all smiles and took it like a champ. “You look great. I think the scientology is working,” Jimmy added.
We knew Jimmy would be funny, but we definitely didn’t know what to expect from the comedian, as he always takes a different angle.
“You walk on stage. You tell some jokes. You try to stay loose and lively throughout the broadcast. You try to stay involved,” Jimmy told Good Morning America before taking the stage at Sunday’s show. “But people keep reminding you that it’s the Oscars and that there are three times as many people watching, and that it’s the most important awards show.”
He also prepped us for the Matt Damon disses, as his BFF is nominated as a producer of Manchester by the Sea.
“Unfortunately, we will see Matt Damon. I have to look at his face in the audience. Odds are I’m gonna say something,” he said. “He’s my arch enemy, really. I mean, if the Joker and the Batman were face to face, there would be some kind of a standoff and I would imagine that that will be the same for this… “I don’t want the film to lose. I want him to lose.”
