There is an epic but very subtle reference to ‘Harry Potter’ in the opening scene of ‘Beauty & the Beast’ with Emma Watson, a.k.a. Hermione Granger. Even if you’re a Potterhead, you may have missed it! Rewatch the scene and revel in the awesomeness of this little Easter egg.
“Good morning, Monsieur Jean. Have you lost something again?” Emma Watson, as Belle, asks in the scene. “I believe I have. Problem is, I can’t remember what,” Monsieur Jean says. While Monsieur Jean’s words may not bring back any Potter memories, they’re about to.
One Redditor pointed out that in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Neville Longbottom receives a Remembrall, a ball filled with smoke that turns red when the owner has forgotten something. When the clear ball turns red in the scene, Neville says, “The only problem is, I can’t remember what I’ve forgotten.”
However, another Redditor claimed that Monsieur Jean’s line was not a direct connection to Harry Potter. “I hate to play devil’s advocate, but this is one of the oldest gags in the book…,” the user wrote. “While the whole ‘forgetting something you’ve forgotten’ bit is a line in HP, it’s not a HP specific reference. It’s a joke that’s been used many times over.”
While we see this Redditor’s point of view, it can’t be just a coincidence that such a similar line was uttered in a scene with Hermione Granger herself, right? The live-action Beauty & the Beast, which also Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Ewan McGregor, and Emma Thompson, will hit theaters on March 17, and you know Potterheads, like myself, will be keeping their eye out for more sneaky references!
