A Tegan and Sara show is always special, but in Bristol, England on Feb. 15, the band gave crowdgoers a treat when they diverged from the setlist and dusted off a song that they haven’t played in years. Oh, and Tegan completely put a drunken heckler in his place with a speech that was just instantly iconic. Here’s what went down!
As they rotated through hits from Heartthrob, Sainthood, The Con and Love You To Death — plus the very necessary “Walking With a Ghost” from So Jealous — Tegan and Sara‘s concert at O2 Academy Bristol was shaping up to be like any other night. Tegan and Sara Quin danced and crooned along with the Wednesday night crowd, walking us through heartbreak, desire, requited love and everything in between.
And then the acoustic portion happened.
An unidentified male — who will henceforth be known as the physical manifestation of an Internet troll — apparently decided that it would be a brilliant idea to take advantage of the banter that followed their stirring acoustic performance of “The Con”. It’s typical for audience members to shout stuff back at the twins when they talk between songs, but typically it is positive, such as “You’re fit, Tegan,” or “Come to Brazil.” You know, the usual.
But this guy had other plans. “I like your old stuff [better],” he slurred at the band — twice — and when Tegan paused before the microphone, thinking over her reply, you could feel the air sucked out of the place.
What came next was an eloquent, spur-of-the-moment speech that had everyone’s jaw dropping. “Here’s the good news about Tegan and Sara,” she began quietly, commanding the room’s attention. “You’re witnessing it right now. We’re always going to play a mix of new and old. What’s really cool about our band is that for eighteen years, we’ve defied what lots of people thought we wouldn’t be able to do, which is last. Stick around. Be popular, even though we were lesbians when it was not cool to be lesbians,” Tegan continued.
“And you know whats f*cking cool about seventeen years and eight records? You don’t want permission. You don’t need it, and you don’t care for it,” she added (basically telling the dude: shut the eff up because Tegan and Sara is awesome and everyone thinks so and no one asked you, anyway). She went on to play “Soil, Soil”, which fans hadn’t heard on this tour at all, proving that yes, “old stuff” is welcome, but not because rude people demand it. They perform songs written a decade ago or more because it’s what feels right for the band. Respect.
