Not every hometown date can go smoothly — and Nick Viall found that out first hand with his final four.
After Kristina was sent home before the rose ceremony last week, Corinne, Vanessa, Rachel and Raven were all headed to their hometowns with Nick Viall. Yes, heading to four hometowns was the first Bachelor tradition Nick actually kept! (Let’s be honest, he was heading Corinne’s hometown just to meet Raquel, right? Well, only time will tell.)
First up was Raven — they headed on a four-wheeler through the mud in Hoxie, Arkansas, stopping to strip down and make out in the swamp. Yes, really. The 26-year-old also had her brother, a town cop, scare him which was pretty hilarious. Overall, they had a fun connection, but it needed to take the serious turn; and that happened the minute they got to her parents’ house.
Her father had just fought lung cancer, so it was extremely emotional for her to bring home Nick — especially when they surprised her with news that he was cancer-free. Her father took a little bit to impress, but eventually said he really could see them ending up together. Raven had always felt that she couldn’t find a love like her parents had, but now she could — but she still couldn’t tell him. She was too afraid to say “I love you.”
Next up, Nick went to see Rachel in Dallas, Texas. The 31-year-old took Nick to church, his first time in a predominately black church, and he was super welcomed. He looked uncomfortable but since he had grown up in churches with his parents, he had the right answer for Rachel when she asked how he felt: “Amen is amen.”
Once it came time to meet the family, everyone was so focused on their interracial relationship; they weren’t sure if he knew what they were eating (it was mac and cheese, by the way).
When the conversation started, race kept coming up — this was his first serious relationship with a black woman, and her first serious relationship with a white man. But ultimately, he convinced them that none of that mattered. The biggest statement was made by Rachel’s mother: Nick reminded her of Rachel’s father, who couldn’t be there due to work. Rachel noticed then, that she was falling in love with Nick. But she didn’t tell him, either.
Corinne Over Your Head
Of course, the most anticipated date was with Corinne in Miami — and they went to the mall. The 24-year-old took him on a high-end shopping spree, spending $3,423 on an outfit for him. Nick was “red with anxiety” over her swiping her card so easily, but she didn’t seem to mind! It was a very Pretty Woman-ish scene with champagne instead of pizza, and a cringe-worth “I love you” instead of the fairytale.
Then Nick finally did meet the family — and Raquel, who her family explained was her second mother. Her dad was very hesitant about Nick, asking her if she really could see a future with him, and if she was okay being the breadwinner. She said yes. He was tough, but Corinne’s father did approve at the end: “I think Corinne is the lid to Nick’s pot.”
Saving The Toughest For Last
Last but not least, Nick went to Vanessa’s hometown in Montreal! She first brought him to meet her students; she’s a special needs teacher and clearly had an incredible bond with them — something Nick was so moved by. He then met the two sides of her family — her parents were divorced, so first up was her mother’s side. They didn’t seem impressed with Nick, they were extremely protective, and they brought up how many serious conversations they still needed to have — like if they’d live in Montreal or US.
Then when you thought it couldn’t get more intense, Nick met Vanessa’s father. He asked her father if he’d give his blessing if he were to propose — and her father said no. He didn’t feel comfortable giving that blessing, when he had just asked three other parents the same thing. And once her father told Vanessa he asked everyone that, she was really upset and confused.
ABC naturally made it look like Vanessa was so confused afterward that she was going to approach Nick in his hotel room in NYC, before the final rose ceremony. However, it was actually Andi Dorfman who showed up at his door, with a To Be Continued ending.
HollywoodLifers, who do you think should make the final three?
