It’s the perfect underdog story: The paranoid, nerdy player has made it to the Final 6 on Season 33 of ‘Survivor.’ David Wright is arguably the biggest threat left heading into the Dec. 14 finale, and you can get to know him better right here!
1. He’s a chess player
David Wright has shown he’s an incredibly strategic person while playing Survivor, and he definitely gets some of that skill from one of his favorite pastimes — playing chess. “Chess has taught me to always look ahead, so I’m prepared to seize an opportunity when one presents itself,” he explained. He’s also played against the No. 1 chess player in the world, Magnus Carlsen!
2. He’s open about his struggle with anxiety
Throughout the entire season of Survivor, David has made it clear that one of the biggest things he wants to accomplish is overcoming his anxiety. “Everything about Survivor I try to avoid,” he said. “The physical stuff, the going outside, I hate the sun. The social aspect? Generally, I avoid going to bars and meeting large groups of people, especially groups of strangers. I get anxiety on my way to a party, I get anxiety in the shower on my way to go to that party. None of that is what I enjoy. But because I love this game so much, I’m all in.”
3. He’s a TV writer
There’s a reason David is able to be so witty and entertaining on camera — he writes for television! His IMDB page shows he has credits working on Family Guy and Malcolm in the Middle.
4. He’s not to be confused for the baseball player
David is far from athletic, so it’s pretty ironic that the New York Mets third baseman holds the same name as him!
5. He hadn’t gone camping in YEARS before being on the show
Clearly, David isn’t one with the outdoors, and before coming on Survivor, he even admitted he hadn’t been camping in over 20 years — and that was his only time roughing it. “Some raccoons invaded our camp and stole all our stuff,” he revealed. “And that was the last time I’ve been in the wood.” Until now, of course!
