It is that time of year again! No, not the holiday season, but ‘Star Wars’ season as ‘Rogue One’: A Star Wars Story’ will be hitting theaters on Dec. 16, and HollywoodLife.com has some great news! It is awesome and your childhood will forever remain intact! Check out our review now!
For a film that has new characters but a story we are all familiar with, it is safe to say people’s excitement has been through the roof for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story! But when it comes to anticipation, the one thing that is immediately next to it in the minds of many is disappointment. Well, no need to worry, the force is strong with this one!
After J.J. Abrams breathed new life in the Star Wars universe with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, many have had visions what the standalone films would do to the franchise with the stories we have all grown to love. Rogue One, which takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope is the first to take the test, and though it is not perfect, the film has plenty of action, surprises, and if you’ve seen the trailers, enough Darth Vader to get every fan jazzed up to go see it a handful of times.
But it is the new characters that are the life force of this film. If you are a seasoned Star Wars vet, you can still bring family and friends that are new to the world that is in a galaxy far, far away, and everyone will be able to get something out of it.
The story, which follows Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), a Rebellion soldier and criminal, as she sets out on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star, has so much heart and pulls on all of your emotions. You will cheer, cry, and be nostalgic all at once. It really is a lot to take in that we are seeing a new story for our beloved Star Wars. It is like seeing an old friend that you haven’t seen in a long time, but they have the same crazy stories that you fell in love with in the first place.
One thing to get used to out of the gate is that this is a standalone film. You will not get the normal Star Wars scroll in the beginning, nor will you get a rousing soundtrack brought to you by the iconic John Williams. The music is great and in good hands with composer Michael Giacchino, but also allows the film to have its own identity before it dives into the stories and answers we are familiar with and love. And the movie seamlessly dives into what everyone wants and expects and never cheapens what came before it. The year 2016 has been a trying yet for some, but we can all say we have a great Star Wars film to end the year right!
When you go see Rogue One this weekend, go in confidently as the holidays have come early! Santa has bestowed us all with our first gift for Christmas! The only real problem with the film being out is that we have to wait until next December to get more of the story, and we are already jonesing for it. It will have you watching the past films again as well, and you’ll want to go back to the theaters to see what you missed and what you loved in the first place. Go see Rogue One, spend a magical few hours away from everything, have fun, and be a kid again!
