Though president-elect Donald Trump had several candidates in the running for his secretary of state, the role was finally filled by Rex Tillerson on Dec. 13, the transition team confirmed.
President-elect Donald Trump announced on Dec. 13 that Rex Tillerson will be secretary of state, adding one more member to his cabinet. Though every decision Donald makes and position he fills is of great importance to our nation, the role of secretary of state in particular is a very serious one, as that person will be the one responsible for our relationships with other countries.
By choosing Rex, the president-elect is dismissing serious concerns by lawmakers on both sides of the aisle that the ExxonMobil CEO is just a tad too close with Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia. Rex is actually so buddy-buddy with Russia that the country awarded him their Order of Friendship in 2013. Because of that relationship, policymakers are worried Rex’s stake in the foreign country’s energy industry could blur the lines between his interests as the head of an energy giant and his role as the country’s top diplomat.
“His tenacity, broad experience and deep understanding of geopolitics make him an excellent choice for Secretary of State,” Trump said in a statement.
While ultimately Rex was chosen to be the next secretary of state, he was not the only one in consideration for the position. Donald had been mulling over whether he’d appoint former mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani, one of his most loyal supporters throughout the election, or former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, one of his most serious critics, before making his final pick.
