Talk about a collaboration. As if we didn’t already love Kelly Clarkson’s rendition of ‘It’s Quiet Uptown’ from ‘The Hamilton Mixtape,’ it only got better on Dec. 13 when ‘The Voice’ frontrunner Billy Gilman joined her for a duet.
If anyone knows about becoming a star on reality TV, it’s American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson. So it was perfect when she joined Billy Gilman for quite an emotional song! Kelly, 34, looked stunning in a long black tuxedo-style dress and she and Billy made a seriously amazing team, both showing up how powerful their voices are.
Kelly recorded “It’s Quiet Uptown” for The Hamilton Mixtape, not knowing that she would be singing about Alexandra Hamilton and his wife’s struggling after their teenage son died. At the time, she was pregnant with her second child.
“I hadn’t seen [Hamilton], hadn’t heard anyone talk about it because where I live [in Nashville], nobody had seen it. He sent the song to me at like 1 a.m., and I sent an email back to him with a lot of expletives! I was so angry, because I was pregnant with my son, and it’s all about their son dying,” she told EW about the song. “And I didn’t really know the situation, so I didn’t know if it was a baby, I didn’t know what it was. I was a complete mess, but I was like, ‘It’s beautiful. I’ll try and do it, but I can’t promise you I can get through the dang thing.’ We ended up recording it that next week, and so I recorded it before [seeing the musical].”
She referred to the day she recored it as “literally the hardest thing I’ve ever done in the studio,” adding that since she hadn’t seen the show, she didn’t know what had really happened to their son. “I’m like about to pop with my baby, and I’m terrified of a miscarriage at this point because I have friends that have had them – and it’s a possibility, even that far into your pregnancy. And I’m having a son [too]! It was really hardcore, emotional hell for me.”
So, that explains the emotional performance! Either way, she nailed it, as did Billy! Didyou love the performance?
