Bryce Petty has given New York Jets fans a reason to cheer! He helped the team score a much needed win on Dec. 11, snapping a month-long losing streak. As Gang Green gets amped for the rest of the season, get to know all about Bryce.
1. He’s still just a rookie.
When Bryce Petty, 25, took the field against for the New York Jets’ game against the San Francisco 49ers, it was his second time as the team’s starting quarterback. His first outing was a Nov. 12 game against the Los Angeles Rams, a game the Jets would lose, 9-6. It seemed like Gang Green was going down again in the Dec. 11 match with the Niners. Bryce, taking over for Ryan Fitzpatrick, 34, threw an interception on his first snap. Yikes.
Thankfully, Bryce led the Jets to 11 points in the fourth quarter to force overtime, including a “spinning, stiff-arm run” on a two-point conversion, according to ESPN. After Bilal Powell, 28, scored a touchdown in OT, he snapped the Jets’ four-game losing streak and gave Bryce his first win.
2. Bryce wanted to be a quarterback since he was a boy.
“I was watching a [Kansas City] Chiefs game,” Bryce told the New York Post. “We were in Arkansas at the time and I said ‘Dad, I want to play in the NFL.’ I remember that like it was yesterday.” Bryce would go on to make his 6-year-old self’s dream come true, playing for Baylor University before signing with the Jets in 2015.
3. He idolizes Brett Favre.
“What I loves about Brett…was just the fact that every time that dude stepped on the field, you could tell it’s exactly where he wanted to be,” Bryce said when speaking about his football idol. “He loved it, he had a passion for it, he was always joking with his guys. That’s what I want.”
4. Sorry, fans – he’s taken.
What could feel better than scoring your first win as a starting quarterback? Getting engaged! Bryce proposed to his girlfriend, Jordan, during the Jets’ bye week. “The ring was like upside down,” he said. “I was more nervous at that point than I was my entire life.” Thankfully, despite this fumble, she said yes!
5. Along with football, he likes surfing, hunting and air guitar.
“Air guitarist” is one of the titles that Bryce gave himself on his Instagram, along with “outdoorsman.” His account is full of plenty of shots of him out hunting big game. He’s also posted pictures of him surfing on the beach, chilling with fans and having a blast as Disneyland. Nice. Bryce better hold off on any future vacations. There’s plenty of football left in the season. In fact, he and the Jets have their rematch with the Miami Dolphins on Dec. 17. Good luck!
