Yikes! San Diego Chargers running back Melvin Gordon was only three yards from reaching the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his NFL career when he suffered a horrible hip injury and had to be taken off the field during a Dec. 11 game against the Carolina Panthers. Get the details on how he’s doing.
Melvin Gordon, 23, was carted off the field during a Dec. 11 game against the Carolina Panthers after he suffered a terrible hip injury. The San Diego Chargers running back’s injury happened at the team’s 48-yard line, with only 7 minutes, 48 seconds left in the opening quarter on first-and-10, when Philip Rivers, the San Diego Chargers‘ quarterback, moved up to throw the ball over to Melvin. But the pigskin was snagged by Panthers defensive tackle Kawann Short. That’s when Melvin was hit right in the back by a defender from the other team while he tried to get the ball back. Ouch! Paul Soliai, a Panthers defensive lineman ended up coming up with the football instead.
In a season full of injuries in SD, here is another crucial one: #Chargers RB Melvin Gordon was carted off field with a leg injury

The team’s training staff came out to the field to look at Melvin’s hip before he needed to be carted back to the locker room to get checked out further. The Chargers later announced that, sadly, the former Wisconsin player wouldn’t be returning to the game. This injury was definitely a “crucial one” for the team, as noted by the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Twitter on Dec. 11.
Melvin started the Dec. 11 game against the Panthers with 992 rushing yards and 12 total touchdowns. The player had been coming back strong from an unimpressive rookie season during which he wasn’t able to get into the end zone at all. Though he had to leave the game early, Melvin was able to head off the field with five yards on three carries. We hope that the star is able to recover quickly and get back to playing soon!
