President-elect Donald Trump has revealed his selection for Secretary of Homeland Security: Retired General John Kelly, a Marine who commanded American forces in Iraq. Click through to learn more about our incoming head of Homeland Security.
1. He served in the Marine Corps for 46 years
John Kelly, 66, was the General of the U.S. Southern Command until early 2016, when he retired after 46 years. He joined the Marines in 1970, and was discharged from active duty as a sergeant in 1972. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps in 1976, and served the rest of his life in the Marines in multiple roles.
2. He’s the third general to join the president-elect’s cabinet
The retired general is the third retired general to be tapped by Trump to join his presidential cabinet. Retired General james Mattis is Trump’s pick to become the Secretary of Defense, and Retired Lt. General Michael Flynn has been tapped to be his national security advisor.
3. He did not endorse Trump during the presidential campaign
Unlike many of his contemporaries, General Kelly did not endorse or campaign for Trump during the presidential election season. He even said that he would be open to working in either a Republican or Democratic administration. He actually said in an interview with Foreign Policy magazine over the summer that he thought domestic politics was “a cesspool.”
4. He was a commanding force in the Iraq war
The retired general assumed command of the Multi-National Force–West in Iraq in 2008; he served until 2009.
5. He’s highly decorated
General Kelly was awarded: Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Presidential Unit Citation, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Navy Unit Commendation, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and Service Medal, Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Navy & Marine Cops Overseas Service Ribbon, Grand Officer of the Order of San Carlos, and the Kuwait Liberation Medal.
