Ohio has passed a disturbing new bill that bans abortion just 6 weeks after conception. This means that at the point most women realize they’re pregnant, they won’t even have the option to terminate. Women are understandably appalled, and they’re taking to Twitter to lash out.
This is totally shocking. Ohio passed a bill on Dec. 6 that would make it illegal to abort a pregnancy as soon as a heartbeat is detected — around 6 weeks. However, most women don’t even find out they’re pregnant until their second missed period, especially if it was an accident. This means that before women even know they’ve conceived, they’ve missed their opportunity to terminate the pregnancy. It doesn’t even allow it in cases of rape or incest! Doctors can be sentenced to a year in prison for doing the procedure if there’s a heartbeat.
So how could something so horrible pass? It was tacked onto a larger child abuse bill at the last minute, and since the whole bill is so popular, it’s unlikely that Gov. John Kasich will veto it. Understandably, women around the country are absolutely horrified by the disgusting infringement of their rights.
“Women should be trusted and respected to make their own, personal health care decisions — not politicians,” said Iris E. Harvey, the President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio. “But in Ohio, politicians in the state legislature are doing just that. Not only is this shameful, but it’s dangerous for women.”
PP spokesperson Dawn Laguens fully agrees, saying “After years of passing anti-abortion laws under the guise of protecting women’s health and safety, they lay bare their true motives: to ban abortion in the state of Ohio.” Considering the fact that women often don’t know they’re pregnant until after 6 weeks, this is essentially a full ban
Here’s what women around the country had to say:
the same ppl trying to ban abortion bc they "care" so much about babies sure seem to not care about impoverished children 🤔

A million bucks says none of the men who are in favor of the 6 week abortion ban know when the week count of a pregnancy actually starts

Banning abortion only comes with one certain result: women will die.

On the bright side, the Ohio lawmakers who just passed that abortion bill can be aborted legally, since they don't have hearts!

Y'all wanna ban abortion but don't wanna take care of all the abused foster children or any of the kids starving to death in Syria. Cool

Ohio is attempting to ban abortion. One problem: Laws that attempt to ban abortion at different stages of pregnancy are unconstitutional.

Well to Republicans that said there's no war on women. Texas passed law requiring burial of miscarriage and Ohio bans abortion after 6 weeks

Banning abortion isn't going to stop women from having abortions, it's going to stop SAFE abortions. Don't @ me.

Last OH thought: this bill bans abortion before most even know they're pregnant. Media shouldn't be using images of later-term pregnancies

Ohio just passed a law to ban abortion after just six weeks. That's clearly unconstitutional. But after Trump gets his SC picks? Buckle up.
