And the winner of the Ballon d’Or is…no longer a secret! The name of the player that’ll take home soccer’s top individual prize was reportedly leaked ahead of the official announcement. So, did Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi or someone else win?
Spoiler alert! Seriously, spoilers ahead: Cristiano Ronaldo, 31, will reportedly win his fourth Ballon d’Or on Dec. 12, defeating Lionel Messi, 29, Luis Suarez, 29, and literally the rest of the world. Cristiano’s big surprise was spoiled by Mundo Deportivio, a Spanish Newspaper, who leaked the decision ahead of the big announce, per the Daily Mail.
So much for the suspense! Ronaldo has already been picked by France Football, the newspaper that first founded the Ballon d’Or, according to Spanish journalist Francesc Aguilar. Fransec also claims that the French publication is going to fly out to interview Ronaldo on Dec. 8, publishing the conversation after the announcement is made on the following Monday.
If what Mundo Deportivo reports is correct, this will be Cristiano’s fourth Ballon d’Or. That means he has one less than the five awards won by his rival, Messi. So close! It was Messi who beat out Ronaldo for the award last year. In fact, these two have been dominating the competition since 2008, according to The Independent, so if Ronaldo wasn’t going to win it, everyone expected it going to Lionel.
Even with this reported leak, it’s not a huge surprise that the Real Madrid star would be selected for soccer’s top prize. After all, he has led his team and country to success. Cristiano helped Real Madrid claim their 11th UEFA Champions League title. He also helped Portugal beat France in the Euro 2016 final (suffering a scary injury during the last game.) Scoring silverware in two major competitions would justify him being crowned the “king of soccer.”
If Cristiano does win, he would beat Messi (who led Barcelona to the La Liga title) and Luis Suarez, who scored 59 goals in 53 games last season. Talk about adding insult to injury, since Real Madrid prevented Barca from winning El Clasico on Dec. 3 with a late-game equalizer. Over, 30 players have been nominated for the Ballon d’Or, ranging from Jamie Vardy, 29, to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 35. However, it seems that both on and off the field, Ronaldo reigns supreme.
What do you think about Ronaldo reportedly winning the Ballon d’Or, HollywoodLifers? Do you believe this reported leak or do you think that someone else is going to take soccer’s top honor?
