Whoa! This couldn’t be more shocking. Legendary MMA fighters Chuck Liddell and Matt Hughes have been laid off by the UFC in a serious move by the organizations new owners. Get the scoop on their cut right here.
Chuck Liddell, 46, and Matt Hughes, 43, are out of a job, thanks to WME-IMG, the new owners of the UFC, according to MMA Fighting. Multiple sources are reporting that between 10-15 employees were let go the week of Nov. 28. These layoffs come just a month after approximately 70-80 employees were let go by the new owners, including some of the UFC’s top executives. But of all these recent layoffs, no one is more famous in the MMA world than Chuck and Matt.
Chuck is known as one of the greatest light-heavyweight champions of all time, though he retired from the sport in 2010 after his third knockout loss in a row. After that he was given the role of executive vice president of business development for the UFC. Aside from his seriously amazing UFC career, he’s also a close, personal friend of the UFC president Dana White. MMA Fighting couldn’t reach Chuck for comment.
Matt is also a good friend of Dana’s, and is considered one of the greatest welterweight champions in UFC history. Though he did retire from fighting in 2013 following two consecutive knockout losses, he also found continued work with the UFC, accepting a position as vice president of athlete development and government relations. “The UFC has been great to me,” Matt told MMA Fighting on Dec. 2. “Times change, and I understand the decision that was made. I will move on. My family and I are fine. I do love adventure, and who knows what’s next for me.”
