Odell Beckham Jr: Giants Coach Torn Over Whether To Make Star WR A Punt Returner

Odell Beckham Jr. has lit up the scoreboard as a wide receiver, but is the New York Giants star changing jobs? After an ‘electric’ performance as a punt returner against the Cleveland Browns, OBJ may be switching roles. Yet, before he suits up to return another kick, there’s a catch!

“It was electric,” New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo, 39, said after witnessing Odell’s performance in the 27-13 victory over the Cleveland Browns, according to ESPN. “When he has the opportunity to get his hands on the ball, he’s sure-handed back there. He’s electric with the ball in his hands.”

That “electricity” left the Browns in shock on three separate punt returns. During the game, the 24-year-old wide receiver joined the special teams as a punt returner, running back the ball for 12, 28 and 59 yards. That last run was for a touchdown, but was ultimately negated by a penalty. Prior to this game, Giants’ punt returners Dwayne Harris, 29, and Bobby Rainey, 29, hadn’t run farther than 17 yards. Odell just smoked them!

It seems like this decision is a no brainer, right? However, there’s always catch: assigning Odell as a punt returner increases risk of him getting hurt during a game. Odell also has a history of injuries, which include a hip problem and a thumb issue. No wonder the coaching staff is reluctant to hand over the job over to Odell.

To have OBJ sidelined – especially so close to the playoffs – may not be worth the risk, and that’s why Coach McAdoo is weighing his options. “We’ll take a look at it and talk through it in the game plan meetings this week,” he said when asked about using Odell as a full time returner. Odell’s all for it, though.

“Between us, I wouldn’t mind doing it,” OBJ said. “You never know. Maybe I might get back there. It just depends.” Seems Odell wouldn’t mind more chances to show off for his fans and potential admirers, including Zendaya, 20. The singer and Odell reunited for a New York Knicks game on Nov. 28, sparking rumors that their romance was back on. Plus, if by chance Odell does get banged up, maybe Zendaya will help nurse him back to health?

What do you think about Odell becoming the Giants main punt receiver, HollywoodLifers? Do you think that’s a good decision, or should they keep him as just a wide receiver?
