After Randall discovered Rebecca and William’s huge secret on Thanksgiving, he decides to do some soul-searching with Kevin and Kate. On the Nov. 29 episode of ‘This Is Us,’ Randall has a vision of Jack in the present day, Kate and Olivia go at it, and Kevin makes a big realization. Read our recap now!
After confronting his mother in front of everyone at Thanksgiving dinner, Randall’s only been pacing for, oh, a few hours. He’s only letting Beth and William into his room. He’s been busy writing down a list of reasons why he’s mad at his mother. William admits he met Rebecca outside the hospital after Randall was born. Randall’s angry at William and Beth as well for keeping the truth from him.
Meanwhile, Kate talks to Kevin about getting gastric bypass. Kevin thinks Kate is being a little impulsive. There’s a lot going in their lives at the moment (cough, understatement) and he doesn’t want to her to jump into something because of her breakup with Toby.
The Pearson kids decide to take a trip to the family cabin to let off some steam. Olivia and two of her friends arrive to crash the party, and Kate’s not happy about it. One of the guys happens to be Olivia’s ex-boyfriend. He’s an artsy hippie and brings along a smoothie with mushrooms in it. Oh, and Randall drinks half of it by accident.
When Randall walks outside, he sees his father alive and well. Too bad it’s only a hallucination. Randall immediately spills his guts about what’s going on with Rebecca. Jack and Randall have an actual father to son conversation. None of the grief or heartbreak is present. It’s like Jack has been there the whole time. Is the age we’re seeing Jack the age he died? My gut says yes.
Jack never knew about William or Rebecca’s connection to him. He stresses that Randall was never the replacement son for the child he and Rebecca lost. Randall manages to get out all the aggression about Rebecca with his father by his side. Jack gives Randall some insight on Rebecca. She always, always, always sacrificed for her family — physically, mentally, and emotionally. She kept other things hidden to put her family first. Randall has to remember that before he decides to cut her out of his life for good.
KATE & KEVIN
Kate never warms up to Olivia. She confronts Olivia after a revealing game with Kevin and her ex-boyfriend. Kate believes she’s got some wise words for Olivia, but Kevin’s girl dishes some right at Kate. Olivia tells Kate the entire family is holding Kevin back from what he could be. Kevin is changing and everyone needs to realize that, especially his family. She accuses Kate of being jealous of Kevin for that very reason. “You’re scared you’ll lose all the weight and nothing will have changed,” Olivia says. Damn. When Kevin hears about this brutal conversation later, he doesn’t disagree with what Olivia said.
Kate calls Toby for advice and he hangs up on her. She can’t have her cake and eat it too. Neither can Olivia. After Kevin gets a front row seat to Olivia flirting with her ex, he trashes her. Kevin says that Olivia’s all about what’s real, but he doesn’t think she’s experienced anything real in her life. She storms out. The truth hurts, Liv.
Kevin later admits that Kate was right about Olivia. Kate confesses that Olivia was right about her. She can’t make this huge weight loss leap alone. She needs her family by her side. Kevin feels the same way. He’s making a huge career move and doing it alone isn’t what he wants. Well, Kevin’s going to have more than just his family to lean on. He ends up sleeping with Sloane (a.k.a. the AT&T girl).
JACK & REBECCA
After Randall starts asking questions about his birth parents, Jake wants to consider his and Rebecca’s options. Rebecca is completely against trying to find Randall’s birth parents and Jack notices. She goes to see William. When he tells her that he’s been clean for over 5 years, a look of fear clouds her eyes. By telling him what Randall’s up to, Rebecca gives William hope of seeing his son. When William goes looking for things to show Randall, Rebecca bolts and doesn’t look back. Rebecca refuses to lose another son.
Yvette, the mom of one of Randall’s friends, says that Randall needs a black role model, someone he identifies with. Jack brings Randall to a karate class and introduces him to a guy named Ray. The karate isn’t just about Randall, it’s about Jack and Randall’s relationship. Jack has to promise to help raise Randall to be the best man he can be and lift him to greater heights. After Rebecca watches this beautiful moment between father and son, Rebecca writes a letter (yes, the letter) to William explaining why he can’t see Randall. William is devastated but doesn’t fight Rebecca. He puts the letter in a book of poems he wrote for Randall.
After Randall’s vision of Jack, he goes to see his mother. He brings along all of the reasons that he’s still mad at her, but understands why she did what she did. He can’t bring himself to hug Rebecca, but he promises that he’ll see her at Christmas.
