This just goes to show that sometimes things are not at all what they seem. Emily McDonald, 22, was murdered, allegedly by her husband McKay Hutton, 22, on Nov. 25 along with their eight-week-old daughter Teagan Hutton, and McKay’s mother Linda Hutton, 54. And according to Emily’s longtime boss, Terry Ann Gainer, this devastating news is a complete shock that no one saw coming!

Emily had worked at Lilley Lodge Assisted Living Facility in North Pole, Alaska for five years and, according to Terry, was a part of the Lilley Lodge “family.” “I’m just in shock,” Terry, who owns the facility revealed to People magazine. “I don’t think it has set in yet. They seemed so happy.”

Emily, Linda, and baby Teagan were fatally shot in an Alaska hotel room by McKay before he reportedly turned the gun on himself in a horrific murder-suicide, according to the Fairbanks Police Department. Even more chilling, on Thanksgiving night, just hours before the shooting, Terry said she saw a photo Emily had shared on Facebook of her young son from another relationship and of her infant daughter.

“Then the next day Emily and the baby were gone,” she says. “It just boggles the mind.” But perhaps what puzzles Terry the most is what the family was doing in a hotel room in the first place. Police are, after all, still working to determine a motive. “The million dollar question is why they were in that hotel room,” Terry said. “They had a lovely little home nearby.” Emily’s older child is still alive, police confirmed, and was not present for the murder-suicide.

Terry added that Emily was loved by all who knew her and even the residents the 22-year-old cared for — by helping bathe and dress them — adored her and are devastated by her loss. “She was so kind-hearted and loving,” Terry explained. “She had a gentle spirit. That’s why I hired her.”

Emily and McKay tied the knot in November 2015 and although she was private about her personal life, Terry noted that she and her husband “seemed very happy together.” “I remember how excited she was to tell me she was having a little girl,” Terry recalled. “She was such a good mom. She was so devoted to her children. She loved her children.”

But as “happy” as the Hutton family seemed, Terry admitted that things must have been tougher than Emily ever led on. In fact, in a photo taken at the hotel and posted on Facebook just before their deaths, Terry said they looked very disheartened. “They look so somber,” she said of the chilling pic. “They don’t look happy at all. She was always smiling and laughing. When I saw those afterward, I thought, ‘Something was happening.’”
