Who else is counting down the days until ‘Hairspray’ airs live?! HollywoodLife.com sat down with the cast to preview the special event and ‘DWTS’ star Derek Hough revealed what he got emotional at!
“When she sings her song — I mean people are in tears. We were all crying,” Derek Hough told reporters. including HollywoodLife.com, during the press day for Hairspray in Los Angeles, talking about Jennifer Hudson‘s rendition of “I Know Where You’ve Been.”
“[When you] listen to it, you’re kind of upset that we’re here again, and it’s so relevant now,” he added. “The song itself is powerful but when you add her voice to it, it’s undeniable. It’s interstellar, I can’t explain it. It’s out of this world.”
You can tell by the lyrics what he means — definitely relevant. “There’s a road we must travel / There’s a promise we must make / ‘Cause the riches will be plenty worth the risk / And chances that we take/ There’s a dream in the future / There’s a struggle.”
Craig Zadan, executive producer on the show, also added that while he doesn’t want to single anyone else, he was also in awe of her performance. “If you know Hairspray, you know the song, “I Know Where I’ve Been,” which is one of the most emotional, powerful songs in the show. And when you hear Jennifer Hudson do that number live, you will faint, because it is unreal.”
However, don’t call her a diva — or do, but it’s a term of endearment here. When a reporter asked the producers about working with “divas” like her, they couldn’t say enough positive things. “That voice, that talent… it just seemed made like a glove,” EP Neil Meron added of her, who they worked with on Smash as well.
HollywoodLifers, are you excited for Hairspray? Don’t miss the live show on NBC on Dec. 7 at 8PM.
