Nikki Haley is the newest member of Donald Trump’s cabinet. The pair have a tumultuous history, but they’ve but the past behind them and will work together now that he’s named her his U.N. ambassador.
Donald Trump, 70, has added the first woman to his cabinet with the appointment of South Carolina Governor, Nikki Haley, 44, as U.N. ambassador, according to CNN. The Trump camp hasn’t made an official announcement yet, but it’s been widely reported that Nikki, who previously condemned the president-elect, will join the team. A confirmation is expected to be announced in the morning hours of Nov. 23.
Nikki is the daughter of Indian immigrants, and was the first female and first minority governor in her state. She previously supported Marco Rubio in the 2016 election, and when he dropped out of the running to be the GOP candidate, she endorsed Ted Cruz. With these endorsements, she was publicly against Trump, and made it clear publicly.
The 44-year-old has previously referred to Donald as “everything a governor doesn’t want in a president.” She also gave a video response to President Obama’s State of the Union speech last January, and although she didn’t mention the president-elect by name, it was pretty clear she was criticizing him in her message.
“During anxious times, it can be tempting to follow the siren call of the angriest voices. We must resist that temptation,” she said. She also slammed his policies on immigration, adding, “No one who is willing to work hard, abide by our laws and love our traditions should ever feel unwelcome in this country.”
Still, with Trump and Hillary Clinton, 69, being the final nominees for president, Nikki eventually changed her tune a bit, and admitted in October she would be voting for the GOP candidate. However, she did note that she’s still “not a fan.” She’ll clearly have to learn to live with it, though!
