Thanksgiving has arrived for the Pearsons, and the holiday doesn’t bring that many wonderful memories in the present. In the past, the Pearsons create a family tradition when unforeseen events occur. In the present, a heartbreaking family secret is revealed.
JACK & REBECCA
It’s Thanksgiving for the Pearsons, and Rebecca is slaving away on cranberry sauce. The cranberry sauce can’t just be good, it has to be great. Rebecca’s mother doesn’t go easy on her, even when it comes to Thanksgiving meal.
Randall and Kevin are playing with each other when they run into Rebecca, ruining her cranberry sauce. Things only get worse for Rebecca. On the way to her parents’ house, the car blows a tire and the Pearsons nearly wreck! Jack, Rebecca, and the kids are forced to walk 3.4 miles to get gas. I have never been more thankful to have a cell phone than I am right now.
The kids get restless on the walk, so Jack and Rebecca decide to play the Thanksgiving Game. It doesn’t go well. The kids admit they hate Thanksgiving because Rebecca is “always mean” when she’s at her mother’s house. Ouch.
They make it to the gas station, but there’s no tow truck. Rebecca calls her parents and immediately starts fighting with her mother. On a whim, Rebecca decides not to come to Thanksgiving. Jack and Rebecca decide to stay at the local Pinewood Lodge, and Jack proves he is literally the best person to have in a bad situation.
He comes into the room dressed as Pilgrim Rick, the concierge they run into at the lodge. He’s got the hat and everything. He pulls out Police Academy 3, which was the only movie available. The family chows down on “Thanksgiving Cheese Dogs,” which consists of hot dogs, cheese, and crushed saltine crackers. Rebecca looks at Jack with such love as he turns what would have been the worst Thanksgiving into the best one.
The Pearsons end the night by passing around Kate’s itchy sweater, pulling on the yarn as they say what they’re thankful for this year. After an adventurous and unexpected night, the kids no longer hate Thanksgiving. They love it.
Kate kicks off her Thanksgiving holiday with a weight meeting and dinner with Toby. He’s all excited about going to New York to meet Kate’s family. That’s when Kate tells him she wants to take a break. She can’t be in a relationship when they’re going in two different directions, with him not dieting and her desperate to lose weight.
She loves him, but she’s just not happy. At the end of the day, she has to put herself first. I think a part of her thinks Toby will leave her, and this is her way of protecting her heart. Toby is heartbroken at this sudden turn in their relationship.
Kate heads out to New York alone. When she finds her seat, her seatmate gives her a nasty look. It’s nothing new for Kate. She is, unfortunately, used to it. On the flight, the plane encounters crazy turbulence. Kate and her seatmate end up holding hands as they get through the scary situation.
KEVIN & RANDALL
Kevin asks Olivia to come to Thanksgiving dinner. She’s not sure if she wants to come have dinner with Kevin’s perfect family. Kevin tells her that his family is anything but perfect. He explains his current family situation, and she agrees.
Randall is ALL about Thanksgiving. It’s his favorite holiday. He is so excited that William and Rebecca are finally going to be spending time together. Beth feels extremely awkward considering what she knows about William and Rebecca. Right when Rebecca walks through the door, Beth threatens her mother-in-law. If she doesn’t tell Randall, then Beth will. Miguel accompanies Rebecca, and Kevin’s distaste for Miguel is crystal clear from the start.
Everyone goes on a family hike — exactly 3.4 miles — before dinner. William explains how he usually spends Thanksgiving, coming together with other musicians and playing music. Randall goes to get William’s tapes to listen to at Thanksgiving dinner. If this is William’s last Thanksgiving, Randall wants it to be special.
After going on and on about her terrible Thanksgivings growing up, Kevin brings Olivia a piece of pie, the one thing she always missed out on. Miguel comes up to Kevin and asks if he can wear the Pilgrim Rick hat this year. Kevin gives Miguel a hard no, saying his father used to wear the hat and now it’s been passed on to him and Randall.
Olivia gets spooked and tries to leave, but she runs into William on the steps. Olivia, never one to beat around the bush, asks William what it feels like to be dying. He explains that he’s trying to remember everything he can. He urges her not to take life for granted, even the pie. William inspires Olivia to run back in and kiss Kevin.
A Devastating Secret Revealed
When Randall goes to William’s apartment to get the tapes, he finds a letter from Rebecca to William. The look on his face is pure devastation. Meanwhile, Kevin comes in dressed as Pilgrim Rick. When he looks at Miguel, he knows it’s not OK to harbor such ill feelings towards Miguel. He allows Miguel to be Pilgrim Rick for the first time.
Randall walks in and his discovery is written all over his face. Thanksgiving dinner starts out according to plan. There’s the Thanksgiving cheese dogs and the yarn. Rebecca goes first and says the same thing she said all those years ago. Randall takes the yarn, looks at Rebecca and pull out the photo of him. He begins to read the letter he found. He is furious with her for keeping the secret of William from him for all these years. He may have found William, but he’s on borrowed time. “I can’t even look at you,” Randall says to his mother. Kate walks in at the worst possible moment and announces she’s having gastric bypass surgery. Happy Thanksgiving!
