While designer Sophie Theallet has dressed First Lady Michelle Obama for a slew of occasions over the past eight years, she has no plans of ever dressing Melania Trump. She penned an open letter explaining why she refuses to work with the future first lady, and you can read her powerful words right here.
Usually having the chance to dress a public figure, like the first lady, is a dream come true for a designer, especially because it can really put their name on the map and elevate their brand — but there’s one designer in particular who has no interest in the job! Sophie Theallet detailed exactly why she has no plans on dressing Melania Trump, citing “the rhetoric of racism, sexism and xenophobia unleashed by her husband’s presidential campaign.”
Melania & Ivanka Trump’s Fashion Moments On The Campaign Trail
The designer is taking a powerful stand based on her beliefs. “As an independent fashion brand, we consider our voice an expression of our artistic and philosophical ideas. The Sophie Theallet brand stands against all discrimination and prejudice. Our runway shows, ad campaigns, and celebrity dressing have always been a celebration of diversity and a reflection of the world we live in,” her letter began. You can read the entire message below.

First Lady Michelle Obama showed off a slew of Sophie’s dresses throughout her eight years as first lady, often rocking the designer’s A-line shirt dresses and skirts all around the world — but Sophie is taking a firm stance.
Throughout the campaign trail Melania wore a slew of international designers — in fact, it wasn’t until election night that she finally wore an American designer as she donned a white Ralph Lauren jumpsuit, selecting the very same label Hillary Clinton wore exclusively on the campaign trail. After reading Sophie’s bold words it will be interesting to see if designers follow Sophie’s stance and refuse to work with the Trump family.
