In the series finale, Emily and Richard attend Rory’s going away party in Stars Hollow. The entire town comes together to say goodbye to Rory as heads off to cover Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. “I just can’t believe they did this for her,” a teary Lorelai says to her parents.
“I don’t this is all for Rory,” Richard says. “I think this party is a testament to you, Lorelai. And the home you’ve created here.” He starts to starts to talk about some of his regrets when Emily stops him. But Richard’s not finished. “It takes a remarkable person to inspire all of this,” he continues. Lorelai thanks her father for his kind words.
“Okay, that’s enough. It’s not as if the two of you are saying goodbye,” Emily interjects.
Here’s the thing: That’s Richard and Lorelai’s goodbye. It’s the last scene they shared on Gilmore Girls together. It’s almost as if the show knew Edward Herrmann wouldn’t be around when the revival came together, and this was Edward and Richard’s way of saying goodbye. Is anyone else sobbing?
Edward passed away in Dec. 2014 due to complications from brain cancer. The Gilmore Girls cast was devastated over his death. Even though he couldn’t be a part of Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life, his spirit is very much alive in the revival.
“[Herrmann’s death] left a big void, but Amy honored it beautifully,” Scott Patterson, who plays Luke, told EW. “He’s throughout … these stories. It’s a wonderful homage to him as a person and to his character as well. It’s nice to have him around.”
Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life will hit Netflix on Nov. 25.
