A school bus carrying 35 children — from kindergarteners to fifth graders — crashed on Nov. 21 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, leaving at least five children dead, according to spokeswoman for the Hamilton County District Attorney’s Office, CNN reported. And though Chattanooga Police Chief Fred Fletcher would not confirm the total number of fatalities, it is known that 23 people were transported to the hospital after the terrifying accident.

The crash seems to have occurred when the school bus smashed into a tree that then split apart. The bus was taking Woodmore Elementary students along Tally Road in Chattanooga when it crashed, according to Fred, CNN-affiliate WDEF reported.

Police reported that the school bus driver has been cooperating with the police and talking to the investigators of the accident. The Chattanooga Fire Department tweeted a terrifying picture that showed the schoool bus turned over on its side against the tree. In the horrific photo you can see a patient being taken out of the bus through the back door.
Local authorities told HollywoodLife.com there will be a news conference shortly. “We have no information to release at this point, however there will be a news conference shortly in front of the police service center,” said George Ball, Officer of the East Ridge Police Department.
