Gracing the American Music Award stage for the very 1st time, John Legend blew fans away with a moving rendition of his new song ‘Love Me Now,’ and seriously — his vocals were on POINT! The talented singer’s epic performance was definitely a memorable one as John belted out his touching lyrics to pics of him & his fam playing behind him. How cool is THAT?
We cannot believe this was only the FIRST time John Legend, 37, performed at the American Music Awards! After all, the pro completely impressed us with his debut performance, singing his new song “Love Me Now” at the Nov. 20 show in LA. And we could not get enough of his smooth voice and touching lyrics! Even cuter, his wife Chrissy Teigen, 30, introduced him before his big moment, calling him the “love of her life” — SO cute!
I will be presenting John tonight. A live, unedited 90 seconds. I have 8 hours to figure out if I should give no fucks or all the fucks.

During his performance, John totally stunned in a velvet bomber jacket covered in silver sequins and jewels. As he sang, he stood on a podium with lights fanning out behind him, which created SUCH a cool visual. Smoke also shot out from his podium, but that wasn’t even the most amazing part of his set. Fans went wild when pics and clips from his “Love Me Now” music video played behind him — including adorable photos of him and Chrissy cuddling their baby daughter Luna, 7 months.
Simple yet powerful, John’s performance was incredibly moving, and we love the personal touches. At the end of his set, singers dressed in blue denim came out and sang the chorus with John while jamming out! Soon pics flooded the entire stage, even appearing on the tiers of his podium. But obviously John saved the best for last as the show ended with a photo of John and Chrissy sandwiching baby Luna with kisses! Aw!
John’s latest album, Darkness and Light is set to drop on Dec. 2, and, according to the artist himself, it contains his “best work yet!” “I’m so excited,” he said on Good Morning America on Nov. 4, the same day the music video preview for “Love Me Now” debuted. “I can’t wait for people to hear it.” And if the rest of his album is anything like the performance he gave at the AMAs, we’re sure it’s going to be a major hit!
The singer’s fifth studio album even features collaborations with stars such as Chance The Rapper, Miguel, and Brittany Howard. But his biggest inspiration behind the album was Chrissy and baby Luna. In fact, his ballad “Overload” is actually based on the family’s life in the public eye.
“I wasn’t really complaining about it in the song,” John explained at an NYC listening event on Nov. 15. “I was just like, ‘Let’s embrace it and live our lives and love each other to the fullest.’ But it’s also about, ‘Let that cell phone ring, let that blue bird sing.’ The ‘blue bird’ being Twitter. [It’s] basically saying there’s all these other voices that are going to be out there, there are all these other people watching, but we’re going to do what we’re going to do regardless.”
Not only did John perform tonight, he’s also nominated for an AMA of his own! Back in 2014 he won the award for Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist, and this year he’s hoping to take home the top prize for Collab of the Year for his song “Like I’m Gonna Lose You,” which he collaborated on with Meghan Trainor, 22.
Tell us, HollywoodLifers — did John kill his first AMAs performance? What do you think of his new song?
