Oh no! Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly was left crying and gasping for air after a scary collision on the field during the team’s Nov. 17 match-up against the New Orleans Saints. Luke was forced to leave the game and taken off the field to receive medical attention. Click to WATCH.
The Panthers were in the midst of the fourth quarter on their Charlotte home turf when Luke’s injury happened. Luke, 25, went in for a tackle on Saints running back Tim Hightower, 30, but he wasn’t able to get up after the play was over. Luke sobbed on the field and struggled to catch his breath. When it was clear he wasn’t going to play anymore, Luke was carted off the field. Fans were clearly distraught at one of their favorite players being taken off the field and chanted “Luke!” as he left the game. The Panthers went on to 23-20 win against the Saints.
The team later announced that Luke was being evaluated for a concussion. At a post-game press conference, coach Ron Rivera, 54, revealed his thoughts on Luke being so emotional after his injury. “You know him, he wants to play,” Ron said. “I guess getting hurt was tough for him to take. We’ll see.”
Quarterback Cam Newton, 27, admitted it was like “grim reaper walking out there today” with all the injuries. Center Ryan Kalil, 31, was also injured during the game.
There’s no word yet if Luke will play in next week’s game against the Oakland Raiders. This isn’t Luke’s first run-in with a possible concussion. The linebacker suffered a concussion in the opening week of the 2015 season. Luke had to wait 34 days due to concussion protocol. He missed three Panthers games last season. Luke is one of the most dedicated NFL players out there today, so his latest injury must be a heartbreaking blow. Get well soon, Luke!
