Gretchen Carlson shared two heartbreaking stories of sexual harassment in a Nov. 17 interview, point out that when women come forward to say they’ve been abused — including the women who have spoken out about Donald Trump — they’re almost always ‘accused of making it up’. WATCH right here!
Gretchen Carlson, 50, bravely recounted two instances — taking place only weeks apart — in which she was sexually harassed at the beginning of her career. WATCH her new interview on Good Morning America below:
Gretchen’s first horrible experience with unwanted sexual advances took place shortly after she had won Miss America in 1989 and was seeking a TV job. “It was shocking experience because with this particular man, he spent most of the day helping me and I thought, ‘Wow, this guy is being so nice’. We went to dinner and we were in the backseat of a car going to my college friend’s apartment at the end of the evening and before I knew it he was on top of me and his tongue was down my throat,” Gretchen remembered. “I quickly got out of the car and I was flustered and started sobbing and I remember being inconsolable and thinking, well, ‘I’ll never speak to him again,’ and I didn’t.” Just awful.
“Unfortunately, a couple of weeks later the same thing happened to me again in Los Angeles with a very high-powered PR executive,” Gretchen continued. “Again, we were in a car and he took my head and my neck and he shoved my face into his crotch so forcefully that I couldn’t breathe. And I remember thinking to myself, ‘This is happening again?'”
The interviewer then asked Gretchen if she blamed herself. “Well, I think to a certain part, yeah, you think, ‘I must have done something’. When situations like that happen to women, you fear that it’s going to be your fault, you’re not going to be believed. You’re going to lose your job,” Gretchen explained.
Finally, Gretchen had an important message to us all about how to treat cases where women speak out. “I don’t think we should judge women. Look at how we react to women when they finally do come forward. They’re accused of making it up,” Gretchen sympathized.
