An Alabama man named Jay Maynor took justice into his own hands by killing his daughter’s sexual abuser. Now, he shockingly pleaded guilty for first-degree murder and has been sentenced to 40 years in prison, all so his daughter wouldn’t have to recount the abuse in trial.
Jay Maynor, 43, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree murder on Nov. 14, according to People. He fatally shot the man who sexually assaulted his daughter, Julia, 24, back in 2014. Now, the Alabama-based man revealed that he took the plea deal, so she wouldn’t have to testify about the abuse she endured at the hands of her adoptive grandpa, Raymond Earl Brooks. Julia was only four-years-old when he reportedly began molesting her and it continued for several years, until being discovered by the time she turned 8.
Raymond pleaded guilty for the molestation in 2002, having been sentenced to five years in prison. However, he only had to serve 27 months until he was shockingly placed on probation, according to court documents. Things took a turn on June 8, 2014, when Jay reportedly got into a heated discussion with Julia, resulting in him driving over to confront her abuser. While on his way, Jay stopped by a convenience store and shot a different man who he also thought sexually assaulted his little girl, but missed. Even though Raymond was placed on the Alabama sex offender registry, Jay took matters into his own hands by shooting him twice in his front yard.
This week, Jay also pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted murder for shooting the other man, who was not injured by the incident. As a result, Jay was sentenced to 40 years for the murder and 20 years for attempted murder. Both sentences will be served concurrently, according to the documents. “My father was protecting me, like a father should do,” Julia recently told AL.com. “He is an amazing father — actually the best.”
