1.) Nikki is the FIRST woman to serve as the Governor of South Carolina.
She served as the 116th Governor of South Carolina since 2011, having been re-elected for a second term on Nov. 4, 2014, which will last until Jan. 9, 2019. At the age of 44, she is the youngest current governor in the United States as well as the second Asian-American of Indian descent to serve as governor, so she’s certainly making moves in the political world!
2.) She’s rumored to be one of Donald Trump’s top choices for Secretary of State.
The President-Elect has reportedly “spent the past several days reaching out to political figures who opposed him in the Republican primary to fill major positions,” according to Joe Scarborough of NBC. Nikki seemed to previously slam Donald Trump in her State of the Union response speech on Jan. 12, saying, “No one who is willing to work hard, abide by our laws and love our traditions should ever feel unwelcome in this country.”

3.) The politician was very supportive of Marco Rubio in the primaries.
Nikki endorsed the Florida senator during the 2016 Presidential Election, before he dropped out of the race on March 15. “I wanted somebody who had the conviction to do the right thing, but I wanted somebody humble enough to remember he works for all the people,” she explained. Nikki later endorsed Ted Cruz for President.
4.) Nikki ruffled feathers when she removed the confederate flag from the state capital.
As the South Carolina Governor, Nikki demanded that “the time had come” for the state to remove the Confederate battle flag, after the racially driven massacre left nine dead at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church on June 17. According to People, Nikki said, “This has been a very difficult time for our state. We have stared evil in the eye … Our state is grieving, but we are also coming together.”
5.) Aside from her illustrious career, she is also a loving wife and mother.
The politician’s husband, Michael Haley, is an officer in the South Carolina Army National Guard. He was sent on a year-long deployment to Afghanistan in Jan. 2013 and the couple has two children together, named Rena and Nalin. Before she became governor, she was also in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 2005 to 2011!
