A Tribe Called Quest can still kick it! The legendary hip-hop group served as the musical guest on ‘Saturday Night Live’ for the Nov. 12 episode, dissing Donald Trump while rapping their hit single ‘We The People’! Get all the details about their powerful performance!
Fans couldn’t wait to see the innovators of rap-jazz take the iconic stage at Rockefeller Plaza for the Nov. 12 episode of SNL. A Tribe Called Quest was booked for the highly anticipated show, serving as the musical guest and we need a minute to recover from their powerful performance of “We The People.”
The hip-hop group had the crowd on their feet while slaying the politically-charged lyrics, which came straight from their sixth and FINAL album We Got It from Here… Thank You 4 Your Service. They were definitely standing up for our rights, after Donald Trump‘s shocking election and prior statements. They sang, “All you Black folks, you must go, All you Mexicans, you must go, Muslims and gays, boy, we hate your ways, So all you bad folks, go.”
It must have been a powerful moment for the hip-hop group, since this marked their first set without Phife Dawg, who tragically passed away in March. We love how they paid homage by performing in front of Phife’s enlarged photo, even having his vocals play aloud during his verse. His mother Cheryl Boyce-Taylor recently commented on their first new album in 18 years saying, “I loved my baby boy’s genius sound on it,” telling Billboard. “It sounded like the original history-making Tribe sound with a 2016 updated pulse.” She also opened up about attending their SNL set, noting how it’s still hard to process that her son is really gone. “In a way, I don’t want to go, but this is part of my journey as his mother. I was always at his shows.”
ATCQ also performed “The Space Program” with Consequence and Busta Rhymes joining them on stage! The hip-hop group’s new 16-song album, which dropped Nov. 11, features their iconic brand of conscious hip-hop. Artists as diverse as Elton John, André 3000, and Kendrick Lamar collaborated with the group for an evolved sound and style like never before. Ironically enough, the last single called “The Donald” has picking up interest, especially after a week where many struggled to accept his victory. Tribe made their debut alongside host Dave Chappelle, who had the audience laughing throughout the entire show. Thank goodness for his comedic relief!
