We needed a great big hug and some comfort from Stephen Colbert after Donald Trump shockingly became our President-Elect. In his Nov. 9 ‘The Late Show’ broadcast, the host told America that he gets it, this ‘sucks.’ Luckily he also made us laugh again. Check it out!
We’ve been able to count on Stephen Colbert, 52, all through election season to bring some humor into the craziness of the election, but now that Donald Trump, 70, is officially our next present, he had some deep thoughts.
“I’m Stephen Colbert, I think,” joked the political comedian. “I’m not sure what to think about anything anymore. I am so glad to be with you tonight, I wouldn’t want to be alone right now. I didn’t get a lot of sleep last night. This is what it feels like when America is made great again. I was wondering and I was really hoping it would feel better because this suuucks.”
Luckily, as he mourned, people outside mobilized. He was thrilled about the protests saying “freedom of assembly, speech, and the first amendment are most important things we can do. Don’t stop speaking up.”
Meanwhile, “We have to accept that Donald will be the 45th president of the United States,” he said, pausing as the crowd booed. “I get that feeling completely. I just want to keep saying it until I can say it without throwing up in my mouth a little bit.” Stephen admitted that he’s going through the phases of grief after the win. “I heard Elizabeth Warren got a neck tattoo, everyone processes grief different. I made it all the way to depression, or as a great president once tweeted “sad.” My heart actually hurt to say that,” he joked.
As for the people threatening to move to Canada? Stephen isn’t here for that. “Don’t reach for your passport yet,” he said, despite having “a Prime Minister who looks like the prince from Tangled.” “You don’t get to flee to another country when things get rough here! It’s like a family, you’re in it whether you like it or not!” He then lightened the mood by putting on ears and being a “sexy kitty,” which honestly made us feel a little better.
At least he was a little more composed and had let reality of a Donald Trump presidency settle in. Stephen was noticeably upset during his live special on Showtime Nov. 8 as election results were coming in showing Donald taking state after state. He couldn’t keep up the humor and told his audience, “Seeing this election…people are gonna be saying ‘Has America lost its mind?” as to how the rest of the world viewed our election. “And the answer is — evidently! ‘Back off buddy! We’ve got 300 million guns and we’re kinda stressed right now!’” he joked, even though he was clearly shaken by Donald’s lead.
HollywoodLifers, what did you think of Stephen’s monologue about Donald’s win? Do you agree with him?
