It’s no secret that Mike Lawson’s body isn’t what it once was — the catcher on ‘Pitch’ has been working through injuries for the first half of the season, but this week, he makes a temporary move to first base. So, what’s that mean for him?
“It’s not un-heard-of for a catcher to move to a different position since that’s such a physically demanding job. [What’s tough] for Mike is this new guy coming on and thinking he’s going to take Mike’s job,” Mark-Paul Gosselaar told HollywoodLife.com exclusively before the Nov. 10 episode, adding that the presentation of his arrival is an issue and yes, Mike does get “a little threatened” by him.
However, could his career change be a more permanent one? It’s a possibility, and that could be why he’s been leaning on his ex, Rachel (Joanna Garcia).
“He’s nearing the end of his career; as a 36-year-old catcher, you’re the grandpa in the squad. It’s an interesting thing that these ballplayers go through at the tail end of their career,” he said. “Mike sees the end of the tunnel, and I’m sure he wants more now — wants to know where his life’s gonna go in the next couple years. It used to be he could just think about baseball and about himself, but as you near the end and get older and more mature, you want more.”
With that, he added that while Mike of course still has a love for Rachel, maybe that’s more of the reason why he continues to see her. “I can’t put my finger on what it is that Mike keeps going back to her for,” he admitted. Well either way, we’ll see much more of it in the next few episodes, including a look at his backstory this week.
Pitch airs at 9PM ET on Thursday on Fox.
