The holidays are just around the corner, and we’ve already been indulging in some of our favorite comfort foods as the temperature drops. To avoid completely ruining your diet in the coming months, we consulted with a dietician for top tips on enjoying your favorite treats without gaining weight.
Even the fittest celebrities allow for a regular cheat day in their routine. Khloe Kardashian recently dedicated a whole post on her app to her favorite cheat meals and how she satisfies her sweet cravings. And while Shay Mitchell has the most intense workouts we’ve ever seen, she’s always sneaking in a slice (or two!) of pizza on her Snapchat or Instagram
To keep us all on track this holiday season when it comes to having our favorite foods without over-indulging, Ilana Mulstein, R.D., a registered dietician and nutritionist based in Beverly Hills, shared her 3 top tips with us.
1) Start with water and veggies: To avoid empty calories, Ilana said to start out with veggies and water to help your feel fuller. “Before every large meal, drink at least two cups of water to help from overeating.”
2) Include protein at every meal: Since that’s not exactly the most satisfying meal, Ilana added that you need to make sure you’re eating something with protein. “Think about getting solid protein to keep you feeling satisfied during and after the meal. Savor classic holiday casseroles without feeling guilty.”
3) Prioritize your plate: “Think about your favorite things before you pile it on your plate,” Ilana said. “If you’re a chocoholic, don’t mess with the pecan pie or the extra scoop of potato gratin during the main course. Look forward to your favorite thing and you’ll maintain your weight and feel treated.”
