Is this the real life? Or is this just fantasy? Rami Malek has been tapped to star as Freddie Mercury in the legendary Queen frontman’s long-coming biopic. Is the ‘Mr. Robot’ star going to nail it out of the park, or what?
Amazing casting news! After years of searching, the team behind the Freddie Mercury biopic has finally found their leading man: Rami Malek! The fantastically talented Mr. Robot star, 35, is attached to play the legendary Queen singer in Bohemian Rhapsody, which is eyed to start shooting in 2017.
X-Men director Bryan Singer confirmed the news on Instagram on November 4, also confirming that he’s on board to direct the biopic. This film has been in the works for eight years, so it’s incredible news that the filmmakers have finally found their Freddie and are ready to move forward. At one point, Sacha Baron Cohen was set to star, but eventually dropped out. Part of the reason why the selection to find the perfect Freddie has been so delicate, is that original Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor are on board to produce (and music produce!). They wanted someone who would uphold their dear, late friend’s legacy.
And the filmmakers have apparently found that in Rami, who just won an Emmy for his incredible performance as Elliott Anderson on Mr. Robot. The movie is shaping up to be something spectacular. Penned by The Theory of Everything writer Anthony McCarten, the film will follow Freddie’s life, of course, and his time in one of the most iconic bands of all time. There’s no word yet on who will play the rest of Queen’s members: John Deacon, Brian and Roger.
