What a memory! It has officially been 25 years since Jessie Spano’s EPIC caffeine pill meltdown on ‘Saved By The Bell,’ so of course fans acknowledged the major milestone on Nov. 3! Check out the throwback clip from the hit 90s sitcom, here!
Throwback Thursday is in full effect! It’s been a quarter century since viewers first saw Jessie Spano have a full-blown meltdown on an episode of Saved By The Bell. That’s right: “Jessie’s Song” turned 25 on Nov. 3, giving us major deja-vu! Viewers saw a whole new side of Elizabeth Berkley‘s character when she had a major freak-out after being deprived of caffeine pills on the vintage episode of the hit 1990s sitcom. She was definitely doing everything in her power to keep up with her studies and singing group, Hot Sundae. “I’m so excited! I’m so scared,” she screams while falling into Zack Morris’ arms as he tries to stop her from swallowing her next dose.
This was a shocking decision for the straight-A scholar at Bayside High School, who was going to extreme lengths to be accepted into her ideal university, Stanford. At the time, fans were even shocked by the family show’s choice to tackle such a controversial issue. “It was a stretch for the show,” Don Barnhart, who directed the ninth episode of the second season, revealed to Thrillist. “In those days, drug addiction and drug use on shows was very, very rare on a half-hour comedy. They would do drug shows on the one-hour format, but on the half hours, it was nil,” he said.
Elizabeth later reenacted her character’s iconic meltdown while stopping by the Tonight Show with host Jimmy Fallon in Feb, going all-out for the segment. The Striptease actress also paid homage to her breakdown during her stint on the 17th season of Dancing with the Stars, where she needed “Jive Pills” to dance. The hit sitcom ran from 1989 to 1993, giving us so many wonderful episodes and important life lessons along the way!
