In a new preview for ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians,’ Kendall Jenner freaks out and tells her mom she thinks she has sleep paralysis. But what exactly is this mysterious condition? Find out here!
1. What is it?
Sleep paralysis is when a person is unable to move, despite feeling conscious and awake. It tends to only last somewhere between a few seconds and a few minutes, and occurs in the moments between full wakefulness and sleep, or vice versa, according to Web MD. Most people are able to simply come out of the paralysis episode on their own.
2. How can you get it?
Web MD reports that four out of ten people can have sleep paralysis. It can run in the family, or be linked to things like lack of sleep, stress, bipolar disorder, sleep problems like narcolepsy and substance abuse.
3. How is it treated?
For the most part, there is no treatment for this condition. The best thing to do is simply improve sleeping habits, although medication like antidepressants or treatment for mental health problems could also help. Kendall Jenner, 20, is obviously SO busy, so it’s not surprising that her sleep schedule is irregular and all over the place.
4. How serious is it?
The scariest part about sleep paralysis is more anxiety-driven than actually dangerous. It’s obviously terrifying to feel like you can’t speak or move, even if just for a moment, and those who suffer from sleep paralysis often suffer from hallucinations, as well.
5. How often does it happen?
This is determined on more of a case-by-case basis. For some people, sleep paralysis can only occur once in a lifetime, but for others, it can happen multiple times a year.
